About
After seven years in a POW camp in Hanoi, Vietnam veteran Charles Rane (William Devane) returns to his hometown a changed man. He is gifted a Cadillac and a bundle of money by the town to honour his return, but the following day he is set upon by a gang of thugs intent on stealing his newly acquired cash. After torturing Rane, they murder his wife and son, and leave Rane for dead. With nothing to live for but a thirst for revenge, he enlists his friend Linda (Linda Haynes) and fellow soldier Johnny (Tommy Lee Jones) to help him track down the killers.
Often cited by Quentin Tarantino as one of his favourite films, Rolling Thunder is an unrepentantly bloodthirsty revenge tale, written by Paul Schrader in 1973 before being partially re-written by Heywood Gould to be adapted by tough guy action flick director John Flynn. With his hook hand and double-barrelled shotgun, William Devane is a forceful presence as Rane in this vicious pulp classic.
