About
A complex and fascinatingly contradictory examination of Julian Assange and the whistleblowing organisation Wikileaks from Academy Award-winning filmmaker Laura Poitras, director of Citizenfour 2014.
Granted intimate access to the Wikileaks inner circle from 2010, Poitras initially crafted a film that heralded the group and its leaders’ daring exposure of the secrets of global surveillance. Following its premiere at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival, Poitras significantly revised the film, re-editing it to focus on the complexities of Assange as a leader, his response to sexual assault allegations made against him and his furious reaction to certain scenes included in the original cut. The political becomes further personal as Poitras acknowledges a relationship she shared with one of the documentary’s subjects—himself also accused of sexual abuse—and the film turns on itself, capturing its own hypocrisies and uncertainties in enthralling detail.
