About
Disaffected in her loveless marriage, anxious housewife and mother Giuliana (Monica Vitti at her most mesmerising), begins an affair with her husband’s business colleague, Corrado (Richard Harris). Their tryst does little to subdue her deep existential malaise, and amid the vaporous, toxic sprawl of industrial Ravenna, Giuliana must confront the terrible emptiness at the core of her life.
Winner of the Golden Lion at the 1964 Venice Film Festival, Michelangelo Antonioni’s first colour feature (presented in glorious Technicolor) is a haunting cinematic masterpiece – one in which even the starkest industrial imagery is rendered sublime by the director’s unmistakable visual poetics.
