About
In Rainer Variations, the pioneering video artist Charles Atlas explores the life of choreographer and filmmaker Yvonne Rainer through archival footage drawn from throughout her rich career and newly shot conversations with Rainer in her New York home. In a manner confluent with Rainer’s own avant-garde style, Atlas plays with the bounds of the documentary form by adopting an ‘undramatic’ editing style that imbues the film with a sense of ‘uninflected continuity’. Through lined by a fascinating interview with its subject, Atlas focuses attention on her artistic trajectory after the conclusion of her filmmaking career; the resulting portrait reveals Rainer’s humour, originality and significance as an artist.
