About
A breakout, word-of-mouth hit, Queen is an infectiously fun Bollywood tale of jilted love. The sweet and unassuming Rani (Kangana Ranaut) is devastated when her handsome fiancé Vijay (Rajkummar Rao) announces that he can no longer marry her just one day before their wedding. It’s here the film bucks the usual Bollywood trend. Instead of following traditional family values and retreating into the comfort and protection of her family home Rani instead decides to go on her extravagant and exotic European honeymoon by herself. What follows is a playful and empowering journey of soul searching and a coming into womanhood negotiated on Rani’s own terms. The film’s charismatic lead Rani (“queen” in Hindi) was Kangana Ranaut's first leading role. Ranaut is credited as a co-writer for the dialogue in Queen and the role launched her as a beloved movie star big enough to have subsequent films written for her – a notable achievement in an industry dominated by male actor superstars.
