About
In a surreal townhouse set in a steam-punk vision of Victorian London, eccentric surgeon (Willem Dafoe) plays host to an array of scientifically concocted curiosities, one of which is his ward – a curious young woman named Bella (Emma Stone). As Bella grows under his care, she soon develops an insatiable need to escape the confines of her home and embarks on a vivid journey of exploration that leads her to discover dark secrets from her past.
In this visually exuberant twist on the traditional Frankenstein story, Yorgos Lanthimos’s critically acclaimed Poor Things is a beautifully crafted, uncanny exploration of life and the relationships that generate meaning within it. Drawing from the illustrated novel of the same name by the late Scottish writer and artist, Alasdair Gray, Lanthimos’s thought-provoking filmmaking uses absurdist storytelling to encourage audiences to ruminate on the monster/creator dynamic.
