About
An ascetic classic of Polish cinema, The Last Day of Summer was awarded the Grand Prix at the 1958 Venice Film Festival. Directed by novelist-filmmaker Tadeusz Konwicki, the film is a Resnais-esque portrayal of two nameless people - a man and a woman - on an isolated beach. The man confesses his love for the woman and what follows is a surreal and elusive dialogue that digs into their personal and wartime traumas. Minimalist in design and powerful in execution, this is a fascinating entry in the Polish cinema canon.
