About
'Set against the backdrop of China’s burgeoning trade in Tibetan mastiffs, in Chinese Zang Ao 藏獒, this extraordinary film is a critical and honest portrayal of existential angst in a society where the logic of the market is eroding traditional values and ways of life. In recent years, Tibetan mastiffs have become a status symbol in China and sold at extraordinarily high prices. Following a simple story line about a Tibetan family that is divided over what to do with their old dog, and adopting a highly realist and observational style of cinematography, the film leads viewers into the emotional tenor of everyday life in Tibet’s lush grasslands and bleak urban spaces, as it gently progresses towards its powerful conclusion.'
