About
Beekeepers have the soul of poets. They have a privileged relation with nature, and picking honey is like an artistic activity. They communicate with the bees through their senses, and my protagonist falls apart when this communication is interrupted… In 'The Beekeeper', alienation and despair have so metastasized in the film's central figure that he's virtually one of the walking dead.
The Beekeeper is a study of melancholy and withdrawing from society. Spyros (Marcello Mastroianni) is a lonely, middle-aged school teacher who struggles to express his emotions. On the day of his daughter's wedding, he abandons his friends and family, turning inward to focus on the world of apiculture. He embarks on a journey, following the springtime route of migrating bees and revisits different locations from his past. Throughout his travels, Spyros finds a country that has changed with the restoration of democracy and entry into the European Economic Union. His sense of disconnection is amplified by Greece's younger generation who refuse to shoulder the burdens of history. While he yearns to connect with humanity, and sees an opportunity with a beautiful hitchhiker (Nadia Mourouzi), he finds himself ultimately estranged and retreats further into a solitude from which he cannot return.
