About
Frances McDormand delivers a raw and beautiful performance as Fern, a 61-year-old woman, recently widowed and out of work. Fern takes her van on the road in search of seasonal labour, connection, and purpose. Travelling across the country she meets fellow nomads, discovers a welcoming community and the joy of living in nature. A resilient and generous character, she describes herself as houseless rather than homeless “Not the same thing, right?”
Director Chloé Zhao places actors (McDormand and David Strathairn) alongside real-life American nomads to craft an exquisitely authentic and tender portrait of humanity and the failed promise of the American Dream. A journey into the heart of America that can only be viewed from those living on the margins of society. Nomadland won a slew of awards including the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival 2020, Best Actress, Best Director and Best Picture at the 2021 Academy Awards.
