About
Director Liu Jiayin’s visually poetic Oxhide is an intimate portrait of family life in contemporary China.
Taking the director’s family as the film’s central focus, Liu Jiayin brings together a collection of everyday moments to build a touching portrait of a working-class Chinese family. Part documentary, part fiction, Jiayin welcomes us into the daily struggles of a family whose business is on the verge of bankruptcy. Arguments and restless nights are intersected with touching moments of love and humour that create a deeply moving picture of a family living in a cramped Beijing apartment. Static camera shots allow us to focus on the stillness of the images and the conversations as they are slowly revealed through the process of viewing.
