About
Using film as a form of time travel, The Tree House is a powerful tale of ancestral memory, displacement and identity, and the experiences that make up our ideas of home.
Trương Minh Quý’s intimate feature is a pseudo ethnographic recollection of the indigenous Cor and Rục people, told from the perspective of a former Vietnamese migrant now living on Mars. Set in the year 2045, a young filmmaker reflects upon his memories of the central highlands of Vietnam and the lives and histories of the people that live in the area. By bringing together contemporary 16mm footage shot by Trương and cinematographer Son Doan, with archival footage of ravaged cave homes and tree houses following the Vietnam War, the film positions itself in the future to transform the present into the past; and to bring past histories back into the current moment.
