Sword of Valor will screen from a new 2K digital restoration undertaken by the National Film and Sound Archive Australia. It will be presented with live musical accompaniment from acclaimed Italian classical pianist Mauro Colombis.
Snowy Baker's skills as a horseman saw him cast as the romantic lead in this action comedy set in Spain and the French Riviera. Dorothy Revier is the daughter of a Spanish nobleman who falls in love with an American captain (Baker, naturally) the moment she sees him. Her father takes the girl to the Riveria, where she is promised to a wealthy cad, but the captain arrives in time to rescue her from him as well as a crazed gypsy who has abducted her.
Despite his fine turn in this wonderful swashbuckling epic, Snowy would be better known in Hollywood for his skills as a tutor for other actors across a range of sports, including teaching Douglas Fairbanks and Errol Flynn sword and fencing techniques, coaching Elizabeth Taylor in horseriding for National Velvet, and (so he claimed) schooling Rudolph Valentino in the perfect screen kiss.
