Based on Kazuo Ishiguro's 2005 novel, Never Let Me Go imagines an alternative-Britain where a small portion of society is created in laboratories. Raised as organ donors, their purpose in life is to grow and transplant their kidneys, hearts and livers to the larger population. Kathy, Ruth and Tommy, played by Carey Mulligan, Keira Knightley and Andrew Garfield, are three friends who have grown up with this grim destiny. Angling his film on the axis of a doomed love triangle, Romanek's adaptation is ultimately a film about empathy; about characters who have less time than their counterparts, but who have the same hopes and desires as everyone else.
