About
Based on the novel ‘Netemo Sametemo’ by Tomoka Shibasaki, the Palme d’Or-nominated Asako I & II is an enthralling exploration of a character torn between a life of contented stability and the allure of spontaneity and the unknowable. Ryusuke Hamaguchi's film follows the young Asako as she is left unmoored by the sudden disappearance of her enigmatic boyfriend, Baki. She moves to Tokyo and, years later, meets Ryohei, a warm-hearted and steady salesman who is the exact doppelgänger of her first love. As Asako and Ryohei grow closer, the secret of her heartbreak refuses to disappear from their relationship. With humour and heart-wrenching honesty, Hamaguchi depicts the pull of paths not taken, and the aching disjunction between the real and the imagined.
