Following the events of Diary for My Children, Diary for My Loves finds the now eighteen-year-old runaway Juli (Zsuzsa Czinkóczi) disobeying the orders of her aunt Magda (Anna Polony) in order to pursue her dream of filmmaking. Studying at the acclaimed State Institute of Cinematography (VGIK) in Moscow, she forms close friendships with mentors and peers, including renowned screen actress Anna Pavlova (Irina Kuberskaya), and the bewitching but naïve acting student Natasha (Adel Kovats).

As an aspiring young filmmaker finding her voice and independence, Juli is brought face to face with the censorious Soviet media machine which seeks to stymy any notion of truth that does not reflect party ideology. And while unprecedented historical upheavals are not far away, Juli remains haunted by the memories of those she has lost and is desperate to find answers about the fate of her father.

Winner of the 1987 Silver Bear at Berlin Film Festival, Mészáros’s electrifying second instalment in her 'Diary' series develops the story of its young protagonist and the lives of those around her in an epic and personal cinematic portrait of history. While charting the pivotal social and political developments of post-war Hungary during the 1950s – including the death of Stalin and the 1956 Hungarian Revolution – the film also extends the rich and at times experimental formal language of its predecessor, incorporating vivid colour cinematography, historical documentary footage, and dreamlike scenes of poetic memory.
