About
A sharp-toothed social critique, My Man Godfrey dives headfirst into the divide between the haves and have-nots in Depression-era New York. Godfrey Parke (William Powell) sleeps rough in an East River dump after finding himself down on his luck. One night, eccentric socialite Irene Bullock (Carole Lombard) arrives searching for a ‘forgotten man’ to win a scavenger hunt put on by her wealthy family. After realising the callousness of her request, Irene hires Godfrey as the family’s new butler, where he must fight to survive in a world of plutocratic pandemonium. A shining jewel of the screwball genre, My Man Godfrey features riotous lead performances from William Powell and Carole Lombard and a skewering script that takes on class divide without a pulled punch.
My Man Godfrey will screen from an imported 35mm print.
