Armenian filmmaker Artavazd Peleshian was both an important theorist and practitioner of what he termed distance montage – a practice of editing that combined perception of depth with oncoming entities. During his career he only made 10 short films, making extensive use of archival footage intercut with footage he shot himself. Our Century is the longest and most complex of these works. The film focuses on the idea of human achievement by examining Soviet cosmonauts as they prepare for space flight. As Pelechian commented, "Our Century is a film about us, about me. It's about what I'm striving for, what we're all striving for – every person, humanity. But the wishes and desires of the people to ascend, to transcend, are literally carried out by the cosmonauts."
