About
Yvonne Rainer’s final feature film, MURDER and murder, sees the director embrace a more realist style as she autobiographically draws upon her own life. The couple at the heart of the film, Mildred and Doris, find love as older women and navigate the most mundane and the devastating moments of life together. Their thoughtful conversations about queerness and identity blend seamlessly into petulant squabbles about kale and tempeh. Throughout, a pair of onlookers function as a Greek chorus, and Rainer herself – smartly dressed in a tuxedo – makes her characteristic appearance as an interjector, informer, and storyteller, drawing attention to the tangible and intangible violence perpetrated against women and their bodies. The film is an ode to sexuality, aging, and the complicated but vast love of two ‘unabashed lesbians’.
