About
"In Diary of a Country Priest, the name of God is pronounced at the drop of a hat. In Mouchette it’s not uttered once. That’s the difference. Only the language of cinematography – I am convinced of this – can make the ineffable felt." – Robert Bresson
Bresson’s Mouchette is an unsparing portrait of a teenage girl in a small French village. She suffers the slings and arrows of the townspeople and her arduous family life, all while seeking respite in the tranquillity of the countryside. Having previously adapted Georges Bernanos’ ‘Diary of a Country Priest’, Bresson returned to the author with this adaptation of his 1937 novel. It is an empathetic and deeply moving study of an innocent soul struggling against extinguishment from a corrupt society, told with Bresson’s sublime minimalism.
