A modernist classic from the Golden Age of Korean cinema, Mist follows middle-aged pharmaceutical executive Gi-jun as he travels from Seoul to his fog-shrouded hometown of Mujin. The present day intersects with flashbacks to his early adulthood, where he hid in cupboards to avoid the draft and the enervation of small-town life drained his spirit. During his visit, he meets the newly arrived music teacher In-suk and their burgeoning romance suggests the possibility of different paths for both of them.
A major influence on Park Chan-wook’s neo-noir Decision to Leave 2022 – which prominently features this film’s theme song – Kim Soo-yong’s Mist (also known as The Foggy Town) is an entrancing, melancholic film that recalls the innovative cinematic language of Left Bank filmmakers such as Alain Resnais.
