About
Jessica (Tilda Swinton), a Scottish orchid farmer visiting her sick sister in Bogotá, is awoken by a mysterious loud ‘bang’. Haunting her very existence, she attempts to find the source of the sound, visiting private sound studios and isolated villages, calling into question our origin of being.
Inspired by personal encounters during travels across Colombia, Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s Memoria challenges perceptions of visual and auditory frequencies, woven within the realms of time and space; forming a meditative reflection of identity, constructed through lived history, embodied memory, and experiential presence.
Winner of the 74th Cannes Film Festival’s Jury prize, Weerasethakul delves into the ghostly precipice between life and death—a consistent motif from the auteur’s previous works—painting a phantomic portrait of curiosity, guided by Swinton’s character inquisitive journey, where a transcendental revelation of past and future unfolds with sheer earthly tranquillity.
