About
Lars von Trier crafts a visually arresting and haunting meditation on the end of the world. Starring Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Alexander Skarsgård, Melancholia explores the nature of depression and the eerie limbo of waiting for the possible obliteration of all that you hold dear. Dunst delivers a vividly authentic performance as newlywed Justine who is slowly buckling under the weight of expectations from her marriage and her job. Shortly after the wedding, it’s discovered that a rogue planet named ‘Melancholia’ is on a collision course with Earth and may end all life.
Von Trier, ever the controversial filmmaker, reaches for something akin to the sublime in Melancholia, exploring moments that are both profoundly sad and buoyantly life-giving. The director harnesses the universal and seemingly contradictory experience that presence of impending death brings into sharp focus the essence of what it feels to be alive.
