About
Lars von Trier reaches for something akin to the sublime in Melancholia. Crafting a visually arresting and haunting meditation on the end of the world, he explores the moments of life that are both achingly sad and buoyantly life-giving. Starring Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Alexander Skarsgård, Dunst delivers a mesmerising performance as newlywed Justine who is slowly buckling under the weight of expectations from her marriage and her job. Shortly after the wedding, it’s discovered that a rogue planet named ‘Melancholia’ is possibly going to collide with Earth and may end all life. Melancholia examines the nature of depression and the eerie limbo of waiting for an uncertain future. Von Trier harnesses the universal and seemingly contradictory experience that the presence of impending death brings into sharp focus the essence and preciousness of what it feels to be alive.
