About
'A quirky, dark comedy revolving around the bourgeois and extremely eccentric Van Peteghem family on their summer vacation at their cliff-top villa overlooking the picturesque Slack Bay. Their leisurely rhythm of sunbathing and seaside constitutionals is soon interrupted by the arrival of two bumbling inspectors investigating a string of tourists gone missing.
The film features a gallery of nightmare faces and outrageous performances from French cinema A-listers: hilarious or unforgivable, according to taste. They include Fabrice Luchini, Valerie Bruni-Tedeschi and Juliette Binoche.
Slack Bay looks great, with its extravagant costumes and enchanting seascapes. What makes Slack Bay so magical are its surfaces: cinematographer Guillaume Deffontaines’s widescreen compositions conjure up a sun-blind paradise of aquamarine skies and endless horizon lines. It’s a nice alternative to the griminess of Dumont’s previous work. It's a burlesque of passion and rage, of tense manners yielding to furious desires, of a society that depends on radically maintained differences and distinctions that don’t hold up against relentless natural forces.'
