About
Australian director Ivan Sen’s Loveland is a visually seductive science fiction noir that imagines the struggles to find love in a competitive future world.
Set in a neon-drenched metropolis, a mercenary-like figure named Jack is deep in the throes of an existential crisis. Numbed by the malaise of contemporary society, Jack turns to the company of strangers to temporarily relive him from his feelings of loneliness and unfulfillment. As the unrelenting nature of his seemingly hollow existence persists, Jack meets a young Vietnamese singer named April who reinvigorates his very existence, setting him on a broader discovery of identity and self.
Influenced by the director’s own experiences living and working in Hong Kong, Loveland is a futuristic love story that avoids conventional romantic storytelling in favour of an alternative science-fiction based rhetoric. A film 14 years in the making, Ivan Sen’s Loveland is a love letter to the genre of science fiction and its ability to create speculative futures that pose prescient questions to audiences in the present.
