About
Los Angeles Plays Itself, Thom Andersen's long underseen visual ode to the eponymous city, is a mesmerising masterpiece of cinematic craftsmanship. The film provides a remarkable exploration of a city inextricably linked with American screen culture. Complemented by droll narration, Andersen weaves together dozens of clips from throughout cinematic history to deconstruct depictions of Los Angeles across three segments: City as Background, City as Character, and City as Subject. In doing so, he combines both semi-scholarly dissection with a subjective tour through his personal highs and lows of his adopted hometown on screen.
