About
In her debut feature Lives of Performers, Yvonne Rainer uses the narrative frame of a love triangle between three performers to playfully dismantle conventions of storytelling. Opening with a quote from literary critic Leo Bersani – “cliché is, in a sense, the purest art of intelligibility” – Rainer takes on the comfort of cliché by disrupting her story with metacommentary, protracted movement sequences, and direct addresses to the camera. Moments of emotive, yet understated, dance act as indicators of Rainer’s background as a minimalist choreographer. The cumulative power of her style disorients traditional categories of audience, performer and director to mesmerising effect.
