Presented as part of the 'Ghost Stories: Spirits, Hauntings and Worlds Beyond' program, Paul Leni's horror-comedy treat The Cat and the Canary 1927 finds the potential heirs of an eccentric millionaire gathered inside his supposedly haunted mansion. Only one shall walk away with his fortune — but first they must survive the night with their sanity intact in order to fulfil the terms of the will.
The Cat and the Canary is a beloved and oft-remade silent classic that played a crucial role in shaping the form of the 'haunted house' movie. Leni's background as a key figure of the German Expressionist movement can be seen in the film's strikingly stylised aesthetics, with ghostly mysteries lurking in each of the mansion's shadowy corners.
Organist David Bailey will accompany the film on the Gallery's 1929 Wurlitzer organ.
