About
Boldly experimental, A Page of Madness is set inside a psychiatric hospital and follows an elderly man who has become the institution’s janitor to be near his mentally ailing wife. Japanese director Teinsosuke Kinugasa uses innovative film techniques to convey the fantasies and memories of the patients. This wildly inventive film will be complemented by a transcendent live score by post-rock band hazards of swimming naked.
The film will be presented on a newly restored 35mm film print from the National Film Archive of Japan (NFAJ). For a long time the film was known to be black and white, but after an original nitrate print was found in Director Kinugasa's storehouse, it was revealed the first release was tinted blue. The NFAJ's new print is the only version of the film existing that restores the blue tint. View a short video of the restoration process here.
