About
“I was committed, though, to make Les Dames du Bois de Boulogne a simple film – with the dry, unadorned quality of Diderot’s story, while preserving the depth of its passion.” – Robert Bresson
Hélène, embittered by her husband Jean’s waning love for her, decides to get her revenge. “Rescuing” an impoverished cabaret dancer (one of the soliciting Dames of the title), Hélène tempts Jean with her new ward in a wicked attempt to humiliate him. Bresson’s second feature – and his last to utilise a cast of professional actors – is an elegant melodrama of passion, self-destruction and the transcendent possibilities of love, set on the rain-soaked boulevards of the French capital.
