About
Luc Besson's first English-language film is an eccentric crime drama now considered a cult classic. Léon 'the cleaner' (Jean Reno) is a hitman for New York's underworld. When a crooked DEA cop (Gary Oldman) murders his next door neighbours, he finds himself compelled to protect the surviving 13 year old Mathilda (Natalie Portman). Léon is naive and something of a loner, while the street-smart Mathilda is wise beyond her years. When Mathilda uncovers Léon's real profession, she sees an opportunity to avenge her parent's deaths by becoming a professional killer herself. The strong emotional connection between both characters and its reversal of the protector/protégée dynamic becomes the centrepiece of this brutal and ultimately beautiful film.
