Set in a beautiful and volcanic region of Sicily, Juliette Binoche plays Anna who has experienced the unthinkable - her adult son Giuseppe has just died in an accident and his French girlfriend Jeanne is coming to stay. Jeanne hasn’t yet heard the news. Anna, who has just attended her son’s funeral, cannot bring herself to tell Jeanne, feeling that if the death is not yet spoken aloud, her son’s life is perhaps still suspended in a possibility of neither here nor completely gone. Instead, Anna lets Jeanne wait at the Sicilian estate for Giuseppe’s arrival. Both actors – Juliette Binoche and Lou de Laâge as Jeanne are powerfully present in their roles and as the pause lengthens the unease creeps in. The complex turmoil, yearning and tenderness that is at times is writ upon Juliette Binoche’s face is a masterful study in the complexity and personal experience of love and loss.
