About
The short film Kheyal 2015–18 (24 mins) directed by artist and filmmaker Muneum Wasif will screen on loop in Cinema B on Sundays from 10.30am to 4.00pm until 23 July 2023.
Composed of a series of monochromatic vignettes, Kheyal directed by Bangladeshi artist and filmmaker Munem Wasif is a dreamlike meditation on the historic city of Old Dhaka.
Set in and around the neighbourhoods of Bangla Bazar and Farashganj, Wasif’s intimate and mysterious portrait of this small quarter of the Bangladeshi capital, is a haunting journey that transports the viewer to a certain time and place from the artist’s past. Part fiction, part documentary, the camera wanders through hidden corridors and empty architecture, seamlessly moving between the inner and outer spaces of the neighbourhoods to reveal the surreal nature of life that survives in the claustrophobic confines of the old city.
Shot over two years, but in development for 17, Kheyal uses elements of magical realism to navigate between the conscious and subconscious, revealing an uncertain, but alluring, web of narratives.
