About
The Coward will screen from an archival 35mm film print.
Two of Satyajit Ray's most rarely screened films, The Coward 1965 and The Holy Man 1965 were originally short features intended to screen as a double bill. While they were made one after the other, they don't share characters or storylines but are often screened as one film. The Coward is a story on the intricacies of love and missed opportunities. Successful scriptwriter Amitava Roy's (Soumitra Chatterjee) car breaks down while touring the countryside and he is taken in by a friendly but gauche local tea plantation manager who puts him up for the evening. Amitava is amazed to find that the plantation manager's wife is his former lover Karuna (Madhabi Mukherjee). Emotion simmers beneath the surface of conversation between the three as former lives are recalled.
