A rollicking adventure, The Elephant God is an adaptation of the director's pulp detective novel of the same name. It features Satyajit Ray's detective, Feluda, a figure that drew inspiration from Sherlock Holmes. Ray began writing Feluda and his sidekick cousin Topshe in 1965. The novel series became wildly popular with Ray eventually writing 35 Feluda stories.

In The Elephant God Feluda and friends are holidaying in the holy city of Benares (now Varanasi) when they are drawn into an investigation to recover a stolen statue of Lord Ganesh - the elephant-headed God. The Elephant God is shot in colour and is pure pulp fiction pleasure, featuring a shootout on the Ganges as well as a raft of colourful characters including a cowardly body builder and a knife thrower.
