About
Maria (María Mercedes Coroy) and her parents live at the base of an active volcano in the Guatemalan highlands where they grow coffee and have little contact with the outside world. Maria finds herself at a crossroads: promised to Ignacio and yet pregnant to Pepe, she yearns for the modern world she has heard can be found in America. Director Jayro Bustamante spent his formative years in the remote region in which the story is filmed and is careful not to romanticise this simple farming lifestyle. Made with a troupe of indigenous Mayan non-actors, the film features authentic and understated performances. Volcano won Best Film (the Golden Bear) at the 2015 Berlin Film Festival.
