Palestinian auteur Suleiman, Divine Intervention 2002 and The Time That Remains 2009, returns with a politically oriented comedy that took out the FIPRESCI Prize at Cannes Films Festival 2018.
ES (Elia Suleiman) leaves Palestine, searching for a new life in the metropolises of Paris and New York. In a string of silent comedic set pieces composed with a spare and absurdist touch, the film draws subtle parallels between Palestine and the Western world. It gently skewers the clash of cultures through ES’s observant gaze that echoes the humour of Jacques Tati and Buster Keaton. Through its playful levity, It Must Be Heaven reflects on national identity and the intersection of cultures in a global world.
