About
When newspaper reporter Peter Warne (Clark Gable) recognises runaway heiress Ellie Andrews (Claudette Colbert) on his greyhound bus, he realises he has the scoop of the year on his hands. Initially disdainful and distrusting of each other, sprigs of romance begin to blossom as their eventful adventure continues.
Winner of five Academy Awards – including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Adapted Screenplay – the monumental It Happened One Night remains the prototype for Hollywood romantic comedies nearly 90 years after its release. While debate continues as to whether the film is the first ‘true’ screwball comedy or simply a key forerunner, it is undeniable that it set the tone and the structure for the genre with its sharp banter, class consciousness and atypical love story. One of director Frank Capra’s most beloved works, the film sparkles with wit and the sizzling chemistry of Gable and Colbert.
It Happened One Night will screen from an imported 35mm print.
