The late special effects god Ray Harryhausen used his craft to make sure It Came from Beneath the Sea did not just floundered away into the abyss of forgettable 50s horror. The budget was low and the story was contrived, but it’s the execution, especially from Harryhausen, that sets this film apart. Harryhausen’s stop motion animation births a genuinely terrifying giant Octopus that tries to take down no less than Golden Gate Bridge.
