About

Adapted from HG Wells’s book 'The Island of Doctor Moreau' 1896, this film was banned in Britain until the 1960s, possibly because of its implied criticism of colonialism. After a misadventure at sea, Edward Parker (Richard Arlen) is brought to the isolated island domain of Doctor Moreau (Charles Laughton). Moreau introduces the young man to his captivating daughter Lota and the secrets of the island start of unfold, echoing Shakespeare’s 'The Tempest'. Parker soon discovers that the doctor is conducting genetic experiments and that the strange creatures on the island are of his making. Bes known for his role as Quasimodo in The Hunchback of Notre Dame 1939, Charles Laughton delivers a brilliant performance as the maniacal Dr Moreau.
