About
You have to expose yourself in all your awe, and all your search for beauty, and for something truthful out there, you have to immerse yourself into in a certain amount of danger. - Werner Herzog
Werner Herzog's spectacular Into the Inferno is a magisterial study of active volcanoes around the globe — from Iceland to Indonesia, Ethiopia to North Korea. Herzog teams up with volcanologist Clive Oppenheimer to probe the origins and might of these natural wonders. They meet with scientists and researchers who spend their lives studying volcanoes, discussing both their devastating capabilities and the insight they can lend into the origins of humanity.
Herzog's documentaries are never simple scholastic affairs and Into the Inferno is no exception. The director revels in the stunning displays of eruptions and flowing lava, allowing him to capture their awesome beauty. Yet he finds perhaps the greatest intrigue in those people who have dedicated — and sometimes lost — their lives to their obsessive quest to study the natural world.
