About
Jane Campion’s In the Cut is a revisionist erotic thriller that dwells in the darkness of post-9/11 New York City. Meg Ryan is cast against type as Frannie Avery, a high school teacher who meets Detective Malloy (Mark Ruffalo) while he is investigating a gruesome murder in her neighbourhood. After they begin an intense affair, however, she finds herself dragged into the misogynistic violence of the world around her. Deeply polarising and controversial upon its release, the film has more recently been reappraised as one of Campion’s strongest works and a subversive reversal of male gaze centric cinema.
