About
I Know Where I'm Going! acts as a sister work to A Canterbury Tale 1944 in its continuance of the love for rurality, while expanding on the tension between progress and modernity. In the film, Joan (Wendy Hiller) travels to the Island of Kiloran in Scotland to marry her wealthy employer. She meets Torquil MacNeil (Roger Livesey), a charming and lively young man, when her journey is obstructed by poor weather condition. Finding a pleasant rapport with Torquil amid their frustrated attempts to reach the island, Joan is torn between an aspiration for the materialism of modernity, and the yearning for a simple life promising nature and human warmth. Embracing the legend of 'Corryvreckan', a concocted curse, and featuring the unique celebration of cèilidh to the sound of bagpipes, Powell and Pressburger constructed an enchanting mythical space in which Joan must reconcile with her true desire in a film told with impressionistic cinematography and supreme technical invention.
