About
Tsai Ming-liang's eighth feature film finds the director turning to his home country of Malaysia. In I Don't Want to Sleep Alone, Lee Kang-sheng adopts dual roles as both a young day labourer searching for work in Kuala Lumpur, as well as a paralysed man being tended to by the family maid. As the impoverished labourer, Lee's Hsaio-kang is beset by local thugs before being slowly nursed back to health by Bangladeshi worker Rawang (non-actor Norman Atun). Amidst the urban decay and growing smog of the Malaysian capital, Rawang begins to develop feelings for his vulnerable stead. This stunningly composed film contains some of Tsai's most powerful images as he boldly explores the little-discussed world of exploited migrant workers that prop up major cities.
