About
This screening will be introduced by Sophie Hopmeier, Australian Cinémathèque.
Leos Carax’s anarchic and mercurial Holy Motors is a love letter the city of Paris and to the history of surrealist cinema. The film traces a day in the life of the enigmatic Monsieur Oscar (Denis Levant) who is chauffeured around Paris in a limousine-cum-dressing-room driven by Céline (Edith Scob) as he is reborn, again and again, into different personas and lives. Glancing off references to Franju, Cocteau, Muybridge, Buñuel and Lynch, this elliptical film deftly elides many of the narrative conventions we expect of feature films, yet playfully leads to a profound and personal meditation on the many roles we play on our journey through life.
