About
Sisterhood champions queer kinship and female friendships to combat the challenges of absent families, a taboo working environment and the seedy streets of Macau. Set in the 1990s when the city was transferred from Portuguese rule back to China, the film presents a sensitive portrait of life in Macau, a region synonymous with gambling and sex tourism.
Upon learning an old friend has died in a car accident, Sei, returns to Macau to reconnect with the friends of her youth who she worked alongside in a massage parlour. Her trip to Macau opens old wounds and Sei relives the time when her best friend Ling became pregnant and the two women made a pact to stick together and raise the child. However, not everything went according to plan, Sei is determined to uncover the real reason her time in Macau came to an end. Director Tracey Choi crafts an emotionally intelligent and subtle portrayal of sex-workers - characters rarely afforded much nuance on screen - in order to explore the possibility of tenderness, camaraderie and companionship in Macau’s massage trade.
