A real-life precursor to the King Kong story, Grass features Cooper and Schoedsack – who would make King Kong eight years later – accompanied by intrepid adventurer Marguerite Harrison on a dangerous journey. Inspired by Robert Flaherty's Nanook of the North 1920, a documentary film about a nomadic tribe's struggle for existence, in Grass Cooper and Schoedsack filmed the migration of more than 50,000 Bakhtiari people taking their herds from the Persian Gulf to the greener summer pastures of the Central Persian Plateau. The tribes-people and their animals, struggle to traverse almost unsurpassable terrain, are captured in breathtaking sequences – swimming across the treacherous and icy Karun River and scaling over four kilometres up the frozen rock face of Zardeh Kuh mountain, with no shoes and with babes and goats in arms. The remarkable Marguerite Harrison, an explorer, journalist, spy and founding member of the Society of Woman Geographers, negotiated herself into the expedition in return for her financial contribution to production.
