About
Set and shot on location in Shropshire, a devastating Victorian tale in which the strike of repressed desires within a closely preserved social order costs dearly. Coveted by both the confident, free-spirited Squire Reddin (David Farrar) and the reserved and devoting Parson, Edward Marston (Cyril Cusack), Hazel (Jennifer Jones), a girl of nature who lives in the company of her rescued animals, marries the Parson through obligation, but finds it impossible to resist Reddin’s seduction - a psychological conflict echoing Vicky’s in The Red Shoes 1948. Infused with the allure of idyllic old England country life, Gone to Earth is the Archer’s first co-production with Hollywood, intended by David O Selznick as a vehicle for Jones, whose ravishing beauty lends a mythical, dreamlike quality to this adaptation of Mary Webb’s tragic novel that was awarded Best Score at the Venice Film Festival.
Gone to Earth will screen from an imported 35mm print.
