About
This screening will be introduced by Robert Hughes, Australian Cinémathèque.
God Told Me To is a searing, psychotropic exploration of faith, paranoia and free will. Detective Peter Nicholas (Tony Lo Bianco) is tasked with investigating a series of seemingly random murders across New York City, each connected only by the killer's declaration that "God told me to." Nicholas's search pushes his own devout Catholicism to breaking point as he encounters conspiracies, alien abductions and divine forces beyond his comprehension. One of the doyens of 1970s American independent filmmaking, Larry Cohen blends police procedural with phantasmagorical horror in this unforgettable and deeply chilling cinematic singularity.
