About
In the fictional futuristic Newport City, 2029, conspiratorial international politics and the struggle of a shared existence between human and cybernetic natures collide in this acclaimed adaptation of Masamune Shirow’s appraised Japanese manga. Motoko Kusanagi (Atsuko Tanaka), a cyborg public-security agent, pursues a mysterious computer criminal hacker known as the Puppet Master (Iemasa Kayumi), an omnipresent entity who can ‘ghost-hack’ humans and cybernetic forms, controlling their consciousness from the dark depths of net, with the ultimate goal to reveal an international political conspiracy that will shake the nature of reality. Diving into questions about what constitutes identity, existence and free-will, Ghost in the Shell explores the nature of the soul. Featuring a blend of hand-drawn and computer-graphic animations that dazzle in a mixture of gun battles and meditative techno-earthly sequences, this Japanese animation is regarded as a one of the most influential films of the form, exquisitely re-evaluating humanity’s own position within the age of information.
